Yeah agreed I wasn't massively impressed with the newest series.

Have gone back and started watching it from the beginning this week, the earlier episodes are far better.

Just watched manhunt on ITV.Wont say too much about it but thought it was excellent.

Re: Luther Series 5
Watched the last episode now

It’s actualky annoyed me how underdeveloped the killer is in this episode, and after revealing him early on and having him discuss previous acts etc, how little the police put together. Then the clues they pick up on are ludicrously lazy ‘something just doesn’t feel right’ - even by Luther’s standards (and he’s such a genius in it that most of the time they do t bother explaining how he’s deduced something, he just ‘knows’) it was stupidly contrived.

That was a waste of a really decent concept for the killer - the woman captured in the basement could have been a good story if it had lasted longer, and his final master plan could have been too.

But the worst thing for me is that they totally destroyed Alice - you sort of root for her on the early series and though she’s mad and lethal, there’s method to it. I don’t know whether they were purposely trying to show her as finally completely unhinged in this series, but apart from a few quips she wasn’t likeable really at all and even when being emotional towards the end it came about too quickly and was over too fast too.

The Cornelius story was stupid really - a decent character ruined by a needless storyline, there just to give Luther something else to think about so he can brood and be mysterious and not do his job.

It all seemed a bit lazy and half arsed, apart from a few genuine creepy moments, like when a film or tv franchise gets taken over by a different director and they mess it up.

Also what happened to the lesbian cooper bird from game of thrones from the last series?

Re: Luther Series 5
What I want to know is what were the diamonds that Luther gave to Cornilius at the end of the 4th series as it appears that Alice lost the diamonds she had in the car crash in Belgium. How many fucking uncut diamonds are there floating around between a copper and some bird who slotted her parents and pooch.

Agree with OP.
Didn't enjoy this as much as previous series.
Kind of irritated me.

As S4 showed, without Alice, Luther is just another show about a maverick cop, a we've had a million of those before. So, I suspect in the eyes of the writers, the Alice/Cornelius plot was the primary one and the Hermione Norris story was the sub-plot. In either case, it was screen-writing by numbers.

Incidentally, Hermione Norris is usually excellent, especially when she's being sinister, but even she could do nothing with her ridiculous part. Patrick Malahide was struggling, too. As for the bloke who played the killer - did they just drag a random bloke in off the street?

Isn't it funny you're allowed to say a person of colour, but not a coloured person.

I’ve no doubt him or John Boyega will be the next Bond. I think it’s inevitable they will feel compelled to cast an actor of colour.

Personally (and I said this way before the bodyguard was on) I think Richard Madden would be good.

Re: Luther Series 5
I love Luther and it's definitely watchable.

However, it's very hard to argue with the original post.

The Alice Morgan / George Cornelius plot was ridiculous. No need.

The killers are so fucked up / psychotic there is no need for a sub-plot.

Re: Luther Series 5
I watched it and thought it was average. Also, Elba is massively overrated as an actor. I can imagine them making him the first black Bond though on the strength of this. His torture scene at the start was like a Bond scene with Daniel what is name.

Re: Luther Series 5
As series 4 showed, for some time Ruth Wilson has been the best thing about this show. Unfortunately even Wilson couldn't save series 5.

The police, of whom I am no fan, were impossibly incompetent.

The villain was preposterously omnipotent and indifferent to the consequences of his actions

Alice was reduced to jilted psycho status. All subtlety jettisoned.

Luther just blundered around getting all his friends killed and never communicating with the rest of the police for, um, reasons.

A half-hearted secondary plot that a five-year-old half-wit could see through within an hour.

Absolute tosh.

Re: Luther Series 5
Gave up watching after the first episode, far too gruesome and a rediculous plot that made no sense.in short appalling drivel.
Manhunt featuring Martin Clunes based on a true story has been excellent two episodes in.

Re: Luther Series 5
Haven’t watched the final episode yet but it’s been really disappointing so far. Previous seasons have been tense and well plotted but all the tension in this one was really in the first episode and since then, not much at all. Having said that, it still does ‘disturbingly creepy’ better than any other show around - the bit on the bus in this one is nearly as good as the bloke hiding under the bed

Every episode is on iPlayer at the moment for those saying they haven’t seen them all yet - the first 4 seasons are well worth watching

It’s British detective stuff through a Marvel prism. Fun if you like psychopaths but it’s not supposed to be realistic or to stand up to scrutiny. Agee with Nurse, that other ending was superb.

Re: Luther Series 5
I enjoyed it in as much as a popcorn tv thriller but it's gone down a notch or three from the first three seasons. It was believable cop drama at first but has reared off to being slightly absurd. Alice turned into a run of the mill psychopath where her earlier character was far more interesting.

A movie version is in the pipeline but I think financing is going to be more difficult after the latest showing.

Fifth - I think it was another delivery man for the nice doctor to murder.

Can anyone explain the scene in the house where they catch the bad guy? The black woman goes downstairs to answer the bell. Who rung the bell?

Patrick Malahide was more convincing in Minder looking into George Cole's dodgy dealings.

I enjoy how fucked up the criminals are.

It's really stupid and you really need to suspend your disbelief for parts of it, but it's good fun.
